Research design is explained in two ways, such as in its broad sense and in its narrow sense. In its broad sense research design is considered to be the master plan of the research operation. It may be a detailed plan or a brief plan covering all aspects regarding the nature of problem, type of research, scope of study and so on. In its narrow sense it is considered only as a model which is used for testing hypothesis.
Different authorities defines it differently.
"the planned sequence of the entire process involved in conducting a research study"- Miller.
"Research Design constitutes the blue print for collection, measurement and analysis of data" - Bernad S Philips.
"Research design is a catalog of the various phases and facts relating to the formulation of a research effort. It is an arrangement of essential conditions for collection and analysis of data in a form that aims to combine relevance to research purpose with economy in the procedure" - Selltez.
A research design will always help us in knowing the successive stages of research. It will be a logical sequence and one after the other will scientifically and logically follow. More specifically, research design pertains to the making of certain discussions relating to the following:
* What is the study about?
* Where is the study being made?
* What type of data are required?
* Where can the data be found?
* When will the study being carried out?
* What will be the period of study?
* What will be the sample design?
* What techniques are to be used for data collection?
* How much material or how many cases will be needed?
* How will the data be analyzed?
* In what style will the report be prepared? ................. ................. ..................

Research Design - My response to student request
After the selection and formulation of a research problem, the next task of researcher is to work out a research design. Like an architect prepares plan before construction, an army prepares a war strategy before war operation, a researcher has to make a plan of his study before starting the research work. This plan of study is called by the researcher as 'Research Design'. It is the conceptual framework structure within which the research is conducted. It constitutes the blue print for collection, measurement and analysis of data. A research design is a plan of the proposed research work. It provide a guidance for the researcher to enable him to keep track of his actions and to know that he is moving in the right direction. So a research design should cover the following aspects, firstly the research design provides the sources and types of information relevant to the research, secondly it will specify the approach needed for gathering and analyzing the data, thirdly it also shows the time and money needed for the successful completion of the work. The research design will differ depending on the purpose of the research.
